Note of Interest: The use of PrintCapture has grown far beyond the initial target of logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers. Customers are now using PrintCapture with many devices that we didn't envision or even know about.

What input/output interfaces have others used with PrintCapture?

The table below lists the input ports supported by PrintCapture.

Serial Port

Serial ports, or COM ports, must support hardware handshaking using either RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR. Without hardware handshaking, you can lose data.

GPIB Port

National Instruments GPIB interfaces are supported. Requires National Instruments' NI-488.2 device driver. The NI-488.2 device driver also makes a USB port appear as if it is a GPIB interface.

USB Port

The device driver for a USB port device must make the USB port appear as a virtual COM port. Some examples are some specific serial-to-USB converters, GPIB-to-USB converters, and parallel-to-USB converters.

Ethernet Port

The Prologix GPIB-Ethernet Controller and Lantroix xDirect serial-to-Ethernet Controller are supported. There may be other Ethernet devices that may be used with PrintCapture.

Parallel Port

Not supported.


The table below lists some of the input/output interfaces that our customers have used with PrintCapture. If you have used something not listed below we would like to hear from you. The information listed below is only as accurate as the data that you provide. Please send your information to support@printcapture.com.

Typically, a required device driver must be installed before using an Input/out interface and the input/output interface must be installed before it can be used by PrintCapture.

The input/output interfaces are labeled as: from an output interface to an input interface. For example a GPIB-to-USB interface means the data flows out of a GPIB interface into a USB interface.

This is not a complete list. It is only a list that customers have reported or that we have used.

Note about serial interfaces: Serial interface must support hardware handshaking using either RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR. We haven't tested a parallel-to-serial converter that mixes hardware handshaking such as RTS/DSR or DTR/CTS. Without hardware handshaking, you can lose data.

serial-to-serial

This is the easiest data cable to assemble. See the FAQ What kind of serial cable do I need... and I'm really having problems getting serial data into my computer.

serial-to-USB

FTDI (www.ftdichip.com) provides a number of serial-to-USB converters. Their device drives make the USB port appear as a virtual COM port.

serial-to-USB

ByteRunner (www.byterunner.com) provides serial-to-USB converters that use either the Prolific or FTDI chipsets. Their device drives make the USB port appear as a virtual COM port.

serial-to-Ethernet

Lantronix (www.lantronix.com) provides xDirect Serial-to-Ethernet Device Servers that convert serial-to-Ethernet. Requires no device driver and works well with PrintCapture's new Network Interface I/O engine.

serial-to-Ethernet

Moxa (www.moxa.com) provides Serial Device Servers (NPort 5110, nPort 5210, etc.) that convert serial-to-Ethernet. Their device drivers make an Ethernet IP address appear as a virtual COM port.

parallel-to-serial

B&B Electronics (www.bb-elec.com) manufactures a parallel-to-serial converter, Model 232SPS2, that does the job nicely and doesn't require a Centronics printer cable. Be sure to use its external power supply. You can download the data sheet and manual in PDF format from their website.

 

This converter appear to be discontinued, but you may still find them on the internet.

parallel-to-serial

PhotoLogic, Ltd. (http://www.photologic.ca) manufactures a parallel-to-serial converter, Model CS-ZN, that has been used with PrintCapture. It also has a recorder so the printer data can be stored and processed later.

 

You may need a DB25 male to Centronics36 male adapter or cable if your parallel output connector is a DB25 female connector.

Telebyte (www.telebyteusa.com) manufactures a parallel-to-serial converter, Model 109A, that does a nice job but requires a Centronics printer cable. The specs and manual are available on their website, but not in PDF format as far as I can tell.

 

These converters appear to be discontinued, but you may still find them on the Internet.

parallel-to-serial

ATEN (www.aten.com) manufactures three versions of a parallel-to-serial converter - SXP-320A, SXP-325A, and SXP-500. The manuals are available in PDF format from their website. These converters are a little harder to use because you need to find a DB25M-to-Centronics36F parallel cable (DB25 Male-to-Centronics36 Female). These cables are a little harder to find but you might try a search on the Internet using the keywords "centronics 36F gender".

 

These converters appear to be discontinued, but you may still find them on the Internet.

parallel-to-USB

AV Widgets manufactures an AVW-PCAP parallel-to-USB converter (http://www.avwidgets.com/AVWidgets/AVW-PCAP.html). This product has been used by several of our customers but we have not evaluated it yet. The AVW-PCAP driver makes the USB port appear as a COM port.

parallel-to-USB

HuMANDATA, Ltd. (http://www.fa.hdl.co.jp/jp/usbcentronics.html) manufactures two parallel-to-USB converters. This is a Japanese website and it might be a little difficult to navigate. The two parallel-to-USB converters are the USB-006 and USB-301. At this time, these converters are available only from the Japanese website. We will add more information here as we get it.

 

We have evaluated HuMANDATA's USB-301 converter and it works well. HuMANDATA has provided a contact form at http://www.hdl.co.jp/Printcapture if you are interested in ordering one of these converters.

GPIB-to-GPIB

National Instruments (www.ni.com) provide several GPIB PCI interface cards (i.e. PCI-GPIB). Their NI-488.2 device driver is required.

GPIB-to-serial

National Instruments (www.ni.com) manufactures a GPIB-to-serial converter, Model GPIB-232CV-A or GPIB-232CT-A, that does a nice job of converting from a GPIB interface to a serial interface. The GPIB-232CV-A can be used with or without a GPIB Controller on the GPIB bus (just your test equipment, a GPIB-232CV-A, and PrintCapture). However, the GPIB-232CT-A requires a GPIB Controller to configure the GPIB-232CT-A and control the bus. Both units support RTS/CTS hardware handshaking.

GPIB-to-serial

Blackbox (www.blackbox.com) provides a GPIB-to-serial converter (IC026A). This item may be discontinued, but you may still find it on the Internet.

GPIB-to-USB

National Instruments (www.ni.com) provide a GPIB-to-USB converter (GPIB-USB HS). Their NI-488.2 device driver is required.

GPIB-to-USB

Prologix (prologix.biz) provides a GPIB-to-USB converter (GPIB-USB Controller). It requires the FTDI device driver that makes the USB port appear as a virtual COM port. We have created a PrintCapture Prologix Setup Document that will hopefully help you configure PrintCapture and Prologix to work together.

GPIB-to-Ethernet

Prologix (prologix.biz) provides a GPIB-to-Ethernet converter (GPIB-Ethernet Controller). It does not require a device driver. We have created a PrintCapture Prologix Setup Document that will hopefully help you configure PrintCapture and Prologix to work together.

What source devices and test equipment have others used with PrintCapture?

The table below lists some of the source devices and test equipment that our customers have used with PrintCapture. If you have used something not listed below we would like to hear from you. When looking at the following list of test equipment you will notice that we used the term Hewlett-Packard instead of Agilent. The names are essentially interchangeable. If we mention a Hewlett-Packard 54616C it (probably) also applies to an Agilent 54616C.

Set serial parameters to 19200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stopbit, and no parity. The 1650A is a DCE so it plugs into the PC's DTE serial port using a generic straight-through 9-to-25 pin cable. He solved his problem by running his HP7470A in parallel (no pens and no paper) with PrintCapture so the HP7470A responds to the commands and allows the HP3563A to send its data to PrintCapture.

Hewlett-Packard 8568B Spectrum Analyzer

GPIB interface. HPGL data format. Requires PrintCapture version 2.8.5 and later. A new control was added to Setup> Configuration> HPGL Processing> Process Output Commands> Process Output Commands that must be checked so PrintCapture responds to a command sent by the HP8568B. Customers have reported using National Instruments' GPIB-232CV-A and Blackbox's IC026A GPIB-to-serial converters. You should review the GPIB-232CV-A configuration FAQ and the IC026A configuration FAQ before buying one of these converters.

 

Update: PrintCapture 3.2.17 and later should do a better job of processing the HPGL "Ox" output commands. See Setup> Configuration> HPGL Processing> Special HPGL Command Processing> Process Output Commands.

Hewlett-Packard 8569A Spectrum Analyzer

GPIB interface. At least one customer reported that the only way to get his HP8569A to work was to set GPIB address 31 for the plotter address. PrintCapture version 3.2.1 is the first version to process soft fonts for the Humphrey Field Analyzers. You will need a parallel-to-serial converter to get the data into PrintCapture. A B&B Electronics (www.bb-elec.com) 232SPS2 parallel-to-serial converter will work and doesn't require a parallel-to-Centronics cable. An ATEN (www.aten.com) SXP-320A will also work. All ATEN parallel-to-serial converters (SXP-320A, SXP-325A, SXP-500) are available from Provantage (www.provantage.com). The ATEN converters are a little harder to use because you need to find a DB25M-to-Centronics36F parallel cable (DB25 Male-to-Centronics36 Female). These cables are a little harder to find but you might try a search on the Internet using the keywords "centronics 36F gender".

 

Generally speaking, the people that use Humphrey Field Analyzers are not technical people so we provided a color image (573KB) and a black-and-white image (65KB) for them to look at.
